Sports massage is a type of Swedish massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids and manipulates targeted muscles, tendons and other soft tissue. Some sports massage movements use Trigger Point Therapy to release knots in the muscles and increase range of motion.

Sports massage can be performed as follows:

* pre-event -- a short, stimulating massage occurring 15 - 45 minutes before the event. It is directed toward the parts of the body that will be involved in the exertion.

* post-event -- given within an hour or two following the event, to normalize the body's tissues and reduce or eliminate onset of pain.

* restorative -- given during training to allow the athlete increase training intensity while minimizing injury.

* rehabilitative -- aimed at alleviating pain, minimizing recovery time from injury and returning the body to health.

When Should I Get A Sports Massage?

A sports massage is a good choice if you have a specific problem -- a tender knee from running, for instance. It is also be a good idea to see a Sports Medicine Doctor who can help you identify and correct the movement pattern that might be causing your injury in the first place.

The therapist generally focuses in on the problem area -- a frozen shoulder or pulled hamstring, for instance -- rather than giving you a full body massage.

Our certified therapists have a wide range of knowledge and experience and will utilize every skill they have as the need arises. Your therapist will consult with you about your needs and expectations for your sports massage.

How useful is massage at a sporting event?

Evidence has shown that, properly administered, sports massage at sporting events can be very helpful in the following ways:

  • Used in conjunction with a warm-up routine, pre-event massage helps to increase the physiological, physical and psychological readiness of the body for competition: circulation is increased, range of movement and flexibility is increased and the stimulating techniques used ensure the right degree of psychological readiness is maintained.
  • Post-event massage is used primarily to help alleviate cramps or muscle spasms, facilitate the removal of excess fluid and/or toxins in the tissues and help restore the body’s functions to normal. Research has shown that post-event massage does help to prevent DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). Practitioners will also use this session to advise on the need for further clinical treatment if necessary.

What can I expect during an event massage session?

To begin, your therapist will ask you some questions focusing on how you feel – mentally and physically, whether you have any outstanding or have been receiving treatment for any condition, and maybe a bit about your training/competing schedule. You may be treated through clothing or in direct contact with the skin. You may be asked to sit or lie down on your back, side or front. Some techniques can be performed with you standing. There is no single "procedure" for sports massage during an event, although the practitioner works within specific guidelines according to the condition of the individual, the situation and the environment. On occasion, your therapist may refer you to the on-site medical team. This would only happen to safeguard your own health & safety if the therapist felt that massage would prove detrimental to your condition.

How long does a session last?

The objectives of Sports Event Massage are quite different compared to that of clinical massage, and the sessions are generally short. 10 minutes is an average length of time for a pre or post event session. Although sometimes when time is short, a couple of minutes of active techniques can be used to aid a competitor’s warm-up. Sometimes time allows for a longer post event session. Your therapist will generally give you some advice on how to enhance the effects of the session.

When is the best time to have Sports Event Massage?

Pre-event Massage: While regular massage is greatly recommended for athletes, pre-event massage usually takes place within 2 hours before an event and should always take place in conjunction with a proper warm-up. Your therapist will adapt the techniques according to whether you have done the main warm-up, or the massage is preceding it.

Inter-event Massage: This is a great way to help your body stay warm while helping speed recovery and prepare for your next heat, quarter, or session.  Depending on time restrictions, your specific sport, and the number of athletes needing care, an Inter-event massage can last anywhere from 1-10 minutes per athlete - sometimes longer if specific care is needed.

Post-event Massage: The body will benefit from post-event massage within 4 hours of the end of the event. The type and depth of techniques used is paramount. Our therapist will have knowledge of the benefits and limitations of a variety of techniques that will aid in your recovery.

Why should we employ the services of Richmond Massage Therapy LLC's team?

Event Massage is becoming much more prevalent at sporting events. It is normal practice in many American, European, and Australasian competitions. Amongst more elite athletes, it is an expected provision, when their personal therapist and/or trainer cannot be there immediately pre/inter/post event to treat them.

Also, with the increased awareness of the benefits of sports massage in all levels of athletes from recreational upwards, competitors are looking for the "extra" edge wellness services offer. This is particularly evident when competitors are traveling to and from events in a short time-frame and need treatment that will enhance their recovery enabling them to endure repeated bouts of exertion and the long travel to and from the event.
